Beresheet
Lech Lecha - Family Discussion
This week’s parsha is Lech Lecha which means “You go!”. In this parsha, we introduce Avram (who later becomes Avraham – the father of the Jewish people). Avram is married to Sarai (who becomes Sarah) and they live in Haran. Hashem tells Avram to go from his homeland, from his father’s house to a place that Hashem will show him. What faith and trust Avram has!
So they pack up all their belongings and together with his nephew Lot, they set off on their journey. They travel a long, long time and as they travel, Lot’s shepherds and Avram’s shepherds begin to argue. Avram says: “Families should not fight! Choose where you want to go. If you go north, I’ll go south. If you go south, I’ll go north.” Lot was selfish, so he chose to go where there was a beautiful stream and lots of fresh grass for his flocks, near Sodom.
Hashem saw how kind Avram was and blessed him. Avram’s name was changed to Avraham and Sarai’s name was changed to Sarah. Hashem told them: “I will bless you and make you a great nation with as many children as stars in the sky”. This is pretty interesting as they are very old, and have NO children!!
